WRITER’S WORKSHOP

The Writer’s Workshop usually meets on the first Tuesday of the Month, but we are starting our 2019 sessions a bit out of step with that rule. Our first meeting is on Tuesday, March 26th, 2019 at 3PMT, right after the luncheon, because we are unable to meet the first week of April, due to local holidays.  Our next meeting is Thursday, May 9th, 2016 at 3 PM. For reservations and more info please call Shaké or email uwcstudygroups@gmail.com

The bright Andean sun was beating down at the multitude assembled in Cajarmarca

The May 2019 meeting selected the current “episode” of Barbara’s slowly emerging historic novel on the life of an Andean noblewoman in the Inka empire.

We started out the 2019 meetings in late March (in lieu of April) with a winning and also very witty poem by Shaké. It has what is called in German, plenty of gallows’ humor (Galgenhumor): “TODAY IS THE DAY: Obituaries praising the fellow are fine – But I will not be reading mine – Funeral  speeches curiously make – A moral crusader out of a rake – About me, I doubt if I’ll hear what is said – Because, I will be undoubtedly dead – The monaing and sobbing would move me to tears – If I could recover the use of my ears –  Perhaps I would smell the scent of your rose – Without so much earth right on top of my nose. – Upon my headstone write ‘foolish’ or ‘wise’ – I will be unable to open my eyes – So, dearest friend, if you wish to say – Someting nice to me, today is the day!”

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY !

On Wednesday October 24th at 3pm we will be celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Writers’ Workshop and the 20th of Spanish Through Experience! The program will include Alicia Magide’s recital of Oliverio Girondo’s poems, a Gershwin medley sung by Kathy Power, and Charmian Brainwood’s Quiz (with prizes!). All you have to do is sign up, bring savory or sweet finger food and remember a joke so that we can have many healthy laughs! The venue is Edda Valeska Schmitt’s atelier (where we will be able to see her wonderful paintings) on Obligado 2661, 3rd floor, in Belgrano. For reservations and more info please call Shaké or email uwcstudygroups@gmail.com

The Writer’s  Workshop meets every first Tuesday at a participant member’s home to share and read aloud our prosaic and/or poetic “oeuvres” of the month. Some participants create poetry, others write short – paragraph to page length – stories, or delight the meeting with a reading and reflection on a piece of literature that speaks to our interests. The Scribbler’s corner elected Charmian’s Heiku a winner during our October meeting. Our next meeting is Tuesday, November 6th, 2018 at 15:00 h. To sign  up,  please call Charmian or email uwcstudygroups@gmail.com

Charmian Brainwood’s “Haiko” was the winner for the August 2018 “Scribbler’s Corner:”

The heat comes slowly

While the wintery damp retreats.

And autumn colors?
